This week is one of our favourite weeks in the events calendar; it’s again time for the annual Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. It’s a golf event with a difference when we get to rub shoulders with some of the greatest players in golf, significant stars from the world of sport and entertainment, and many leading business leaders and entrepreneurs.
A great example of how much our staff look forward to this event is evident in the fact that Cheryl Kelly, one of our cleaners who has been with Spectrum for over nine years, worked through her 40th Birthday on Tuesday. Cheryl is a massive golf fan; not even a milestone birthday could keep her away. We wish Cheryl a Happy Birthday and hope she’ll get some time to celebrate it properly after the competition finishes on Sunday.
Alongside Cheryl, the rest of the Events Team will be extremely busy providing the cleaning, litter picking and waste management at all three venues. They are tasked with looking after all public, hospitality, player, officials, technical and Press areas at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns. But, the upside is they get to be part of what has proven to be one of the most popular golfing events on the calendar. In fact, it is the longest-standing event on the European Tour.
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship incorporates two competitions – a European Tour-sanctioned individual professional tournament for 168 of the world’s leading golfers and a Team Championship, in which each professional is paired with one of 168 amateurs.
Play is over three courses in rotation over the first three days – the Old Course St Andrews, the Championship Course Carnoustie and Kingsbarns Golf Links – with the final round being played over the Old Course.
This year, we look forward to seeing some of the world’s leading golfers compete for the individual title: Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Billy Horschel, Danny Willett, Shane Lowry, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Francesco Molinari and many more. From the world of sport and entertainment, we will hopefully catch glimpses of people like Bill Murray, Gianfranco Zola, Huey Lewis, Joe Root, Kathryn Newton, Ronan Keating, Sir Steve Redgrave, AP McCoy and many more.
While it is a serious event with sizeable prize money and great prestige for the winners, it often provides light-hearted moments that entertain the large crowds at each venue daily. We will post some images from the courses throughout the week,
If you want to go to any of the venues, entry is free for everyone on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If you venture out to see the play, make sure you say hello to any of our team who will work hard to keep the venues clean and safe for everyone involved.
