COP26 Forward Planning

We wanted to take the time to make you aware of the potential impact of COP26 which is taking place from 31st October – 12th of November. Up to 25,000 people from across the world are expected to attend over the two weeks, including World Leaders & media.  There is also a planned activist March in Glasgow City Centre on Sat 6th Nov (100,000 attendees estimated).

Glasgow & Surrounding Areas

Due to the influx of people, we anticipate that delegates will take accommodation outwith Glasgow, which means that some areas may become more congested than usual.  We anticipate that road closures, increased traffic, etc will cause some disruption to road routes and public transport will be busier than usual.  In addition to this, we understand that planned strike action within Glasgow City Council & the Rail Network may put additional strain on infrastructure.

We’re advising our staff to plan their journey ahead, be cognisant that public transport/roads will be busier than normal, and to plan accordingly.  We’ve asked staff to place stock/consumable orders prior to the conference to alleviate delivery timescales and pressure on the road network.  We’re also working with our supply partners to ensure the smooth delivery of services.

Please visit ‘Get Ready Glasgow’ for more information.

Edinburgh Area

Although COP26 is based in Glasgow, a programme of supporting events will take place in Edinburgh. Many delegates will choose to visit the city before, during or after the global conference.

Edinburgh Chambers of Commerce are holding a Business Briefing on 22nd October from 08.30-09.30am which will outline what you can expect to happen in Edinburgh during COP26 to help you and your business plan ahead – please register using the below.  Featuring speakers from The City of Edinburgh Council, Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, Transport for Edinburgh and Transport Scotland it will also highlight plans to keep the city moving during the conference.

Find out more about Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Business Briefing here.

We hope this brief has been helpful – Please let us know of any impacts which we may not be aware of (ie temporary restrictions to your business) in order to plan accordingly.

Kind regards
