Caroline Kane is an interesting member of the Spectrum team. She’s passionate about cleaning and is a valued Area Manager in Aberdeen. Caroline came to Spectrum on the recommendation of a previous colleague, Tracie Tonner. The move has worked out really well for Caroline and Spectrum.
We caught up with Caroline to find out why she’s enjoying her role so much and what makes Spectrum different from the FM companies she’s worked with in the past.
Q: How long have you been involved in facilities management?
A: “I’ve been working in Facilities Management for 22 years. I started as a cleaner and gradually worked my way up to become an Area Manager. I’ve always worked with Facilities Management providers rather than directly with a company.”
Q: What did you know about Spectrum before you joined them?
A: “ I was in touch with a friend and past colleague, Tracie Tonner, who had joined Spectrum, and she was full of praise for the business and the people.”
Q: Why did you decide to join Spectrum?
A: “Tracie mentioned how helpful her work colleagues were and how much support she gets when needed. This struck a chord immediately; when Tracie talked about a company that valued her and supported her 100%, I was naturally interested in joining them.”
Q: What aspects of your role do you most enjoy?
A: “I enjoy many things, but the main one is client interaction. I love to build strong relationships with my clients; it’s the best way to work, and it means you can deal with issues quickly and transparently.
“I also enjoy the training side of things, which I’d like to get more involved with at Spectrum. I have earned many certificates and have experience in delivering core skills training for COSHH and H&S Accreditation.”
Q: What would you say to anyone considering a career in facilities management?
A: “I’ve had a great career in Facilities Management, so I’d strongly recommend it to anyone. There are so many different roles available which usually means lots of opportunities to progress.
“I would also advise anyone entering a career in Facilities Management to choose a company like Spectrum that will support you. With the proper support, you can achieve as much as you want to. Some people are happy working at a certain level, but if you are ambitious and have the proper support, you will get to where you want to be.
“Lots of people I’ve worked with in the past have enjoyed the flexibility to choose their hours while bringing up a family and then opt for advancement when the time is right. If you work with the right company, Facilities Management is a career that allows you that kind of choice.”
Q: What are your interests outside work?
A: “I love to clean! I know that’s mad for someone who works in cleaning, but it’s true, I love to clean! When I’m not dusting and polishing, I like walking my dog, which is just as well because he’s an American Akita and needs lots of exercise!
