A fair slice of the golfing calendar for Spectrum

It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that Spectrum Events’ 2017 calendar is about to get into full swing; yes, we’ve already been very busy this year with domestic and international football at Hampden Park, not to mention a sell-out Stone Roses concert, and 250,000+ people to clean up after at The Royal Highland Show.  Now, we are turning our attention to the fairways and greens of competitive golf to provide services to the biggest golf events taking place in Scotland this year.

This week we are delighted to be working with the European Tour for the fifth consecutive year at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Championship which takes place at Dundonald Links from the 12th – 16th July.  The Spectrum Events Team have been at the Ayrshire course all week preparing for some of the biggest names in golf as they compete for the much-coveted title of Scottish Open Champion 2017.  As usual, the Scottish Open will be broadcast around the world and remains one of the few European Tour events that is shown live on American television.

With some of the greatest golfers in the game registered to play, the Ayrshire course is certain to draw a massive crowd, so we know we have a busy few days ahead to keep all public areas clean and free of waste.  However, our duties at these major golf events go far beyond the public areas of the course – we also provide cleaning and waste management services for all other public areas; this includes, public catering, merchandising, corporate hospitality suites, VIP areas, official and technical areas and BOH operational areas.

We are then back at Dundonald Links for the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open Championship from the 27th – 30th July.  Once again, we expect some big crowds as some of the leading ladies of the game compete for the Ladies Scottish Open title.

The following week, we move to the other side of the country to provide our full range of services for the Scottish Seniors Open which is being played at the superb Renaissance Club at North Berwick from the 4th – 7th August.

These three events will keep us busy in Scotland for the next few weeks, however it doesn’t stop there; we are then off South of the border to provide our full range of cleaning and waste management services at the British Masters28th September – 1st October at the magnificent Close House course in Newcastle upon Tyne.  Long established in the world’s golfing calendar, the British Masters always attracts a fantastic field made up from some of the best players in the game.  We are looking forward to taking our experience and expertise South of the border for one of the biggest events in the golfing calendar.

We will be bringing you updates from each of these prestigious events as they happen, for now it’s heads down as we tee off with the AMM Scottish Open Championship this week.

We are delighted to introduce our latest client interview video, this time with Nicky McLellan, Facilities Coordinator for Schuh at their Distribution Centre in Bathgate and their Head Office building in Livingstone.

Spectrum is delighted to work at both locations and we were pleased that Nicky was able to take time to chat about the range of services we provide at each of the location.

You would be forgiven for thinking that Schuh is a German retail brand, in fact the name was inspired by the German fashion footwear magazine, Schuhe. However, Schuh began with one store in Edinburgh back in 1981 and has grown to be one of the biggest high street retailers in the UK and Ireland.  Fittingly, their first retail venture in Europe was in Oberhausen, Germany where they opened a store in 2015.

Throughout the noughties, Schuh’s online presence grew to meet the demand of consumers who were increasingly willing to buy footwear online.  The innovative retailer has carried on its tradition of challenging conventional retailing with its ecommerce offering with the introduction of initiatives like 365 day customer service.

The fantastic expansion of the retail outlets and the growth of the online store created the obvious need for high quality head office accommodation and a highly efficient distribution centre, both are now firmly established in central Scotland.

Spectrum is delighted to provide a full range of services to both centres.  These services include; routine daily cleaning of offices, toilets, shower rooms, locker rooms, Board and meeting rooms, stairways, receptions, restaurants, break out areas and kitchens.  These daily services also include a full waste management service at both sites.

In addition to this we provide, IT equipment deep cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning, window cleaning, deep cleaning of flooring in the retail outlet, and deep cleaning and sanitation of work stations.  All in all, it is a comprehensive range of services specially tailored to suit the Schuh operation and ensure the head office and distribution centre are always clean and ready for their busy workforce 24 hours a day.

To compliment the cleaning services, we also supply a wide variety of products and consumables for their washrooms, hand sanitisers and feminine hygiene toilet vending machines.  In addition to this, we provide barrier matting, logo mats and even temporary barrier matting for inclement weather.

There’s no ‘Back to School’ for Spectrum

The school holidays may be over and Mums and Dads will have been be busy buying the new school uniforms and are now adjusting back into school term time. You’ve probably spent considerable time planning the school runs and just how to provide the endless ’taxi service’ required to accommodate all of the new after school activities your kids have chosen this term, it really is a daunting time when the summer break comes to an end.

KitchenContrary to what you may think, Spectrum don’t have the luxury of extended summer breaks. Yes, we work extensively in the education sector looking after nursery, school, college and university properties, but our work doesn’t stop in June when the kids disappear for their break. In fact, it’s traditionally the time when we become really busy for our clients in the education sector.

JanitorThe normal school year will keep us busy cleaning and managing waste around the day-to-day life of the students, but it’s when they are not there that we can really make a huge difference. It’s the ideal time to provide deep cleaning services in all of the areas that are too busy during their normal use.  So, kitchens, classrooms, stores and staff rooms actually get their real spring clean during the summer.

It is also a time to provide specialist cleaning such as high-level cleaning in the areas that traditionally have high ceilings like gymnasiums and assembly rooms where its is more difficult to clean things like lighting.  Or, carpet cleaning and floor treatment where daily use during term makes it difficult to get adequate access.  And, the better weather (assuming we get some) also means that we can concentrate in external work which might involve pressure washing and ground maintenance.

It’s not difficult to see why the term ‘Back to School’ means something different for our teams at Spectrum, this is the time that we return to the scheduled work that keeps the facilities clean and free of waste, but just as your kids were all spick ’n’ span when the bell rang to signal a new term, the buildings were also shipshape and ready for daily use.

For June we would like to recognise Chris. Chris joined us 12 years ago and is a valued part of the Office Cleaning team at Hampden Park, Scotland’s National Stadium.

Chris is well loved by all of her colleagues and our customers within Hampden, she has also been a great asset on the event’s team over the years and recently took the time to join us for a week up in Inverness at the Scottish Open. This was a new experience for Chris and it was an added benefit to have her involved at such a remote location, once again, Chris made some great relationships and even received a big box of chocolates from the Marshall’s to thank her for her hard work.

Unfortunately Chris is currently recovering from an emergency operation and we wish her all the best and a speedy recovery. We can’t wait to have her back as she is not only a great worker but also someone who puts a smile on everyone’s face with her stories!

It’s no walk in the park, there’s more to it than meets the eye

Last year we published a blog about the work we do at the Hillington Park Innovation Centre which highlighted the way the building is used and the demands created by a building occupied by a wide variety of tenants, imagine then the demands of looking after a whole business park! In fact, the business park in question is where the Innovation Centre is located – Hillington Business Park.

Spectrum Service Solutions has been providing a wide range of services at this 2 million sq ft business park for almost 7 Years. Home to more than 500 businesses, workplace for over 8000 employees, and one of the biggest business parks in Scotland, you can imagine the daily demands of keeping the estate clean, tidy and presentable for the thousands of people who work there or visit it every day.

There’s much more to this contract than people may imagine; it’s not just external work we do, we provide internal cleaning for many of the multi-tenanted buildings managed by CBRE, and many others where work directly with the tenants.  This includes, office, warehouse, and industrial spaces, toilets, kitchens, and sanitation of vending machines.  It also includes the provision and installation of hygiene services, air fresheners, seat sanitisers, disposal bins, and internal & external waste management bins for all waste streams. In fact, we provide a very wide range of consumables to tenants throughout the business park.

Moreover, it’s not just the provision of the bins, we also provide the waste management service for all waste streams, programmed and reactive, including WEEE designated waste.  Add to this, window cleaning, internal & external landscaping, ground maintenance, repairs to yards & pathways, gritting & snow clearance, and car park & road sweeping and you can start to get a picture of the scale of the contract.

However, it doesn’t stop there, everything we’ve mentioned so far is part of a scheduled programme of works, there’s just as many additional services provided as and when they are required. This may include; deep cleaning works on fabrics, finishes, fixture & fittings, carpets, and other floor finishes. It also includes internal and external high level cleaning, façade cleaning, and window blind maintenance. Of course, with so many people working in the business park there are many kitchens, all of which require periodic deep cleaning and maintenance of extraction systems, we provide all of this too.

Some time ago, the client was kind enough to talk about what we do at Hillington, and the manner in which we do it, you can see the short video below.  Perhaps the kindest comment is the recognition of what we try to achieve when Alison says, “Spectrum is a customer service organisation that happens to clean”, this is what we strive for with every contract, no matter what the size and it’s really appreciated when the clients notice how often we exceed their expectations.

Backing up what Alison said, we recently received a letter from Claire McCluskey, Facilities Manager, CBRE Management Service in which she said, “…I have worked closely with Spectrum for several years now and have always found them to be a highly reliable company with excellent standards.  Their staff are friendly and professional and are popular amongst staff, tenants and also our clients.”

Minimum Living Wage will see hourly rate rise by 10.8% – are you prepared?

On the 1st October this year the National Minimum Wage for those aged over 25 on the 1st April 2016 increased from £6.50 to £6.70 per hour, an increase of 3.1%.  This increase will be followed by the introduction of the National Living Wage.

The introduction, and roll out, of the new Minimum Wage has already been outlined by George Osborne with the rate continuing to rise to £9.00 per hour, and increase of 10.8%.  This will present serious challenges for employers, especially those with large numbers of employees who currently earn the National Minimum Wage.

We thought it would be helpful to set out the plans for the new National Living Wage to help you understand the impact it is likely to have on your business, and to help you plan for these increases.  We have prepared the infographic below which sets out the plans as announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, on the 8th July this year.

Whilst the proposed increases do pose challenges for employers, there are many benefits to the new Minimum Living wage that will obviously benefit the employers (estimated to be around 6 million), but they do offer benefits and opportunities for responsible employers.  We believe a fairer wage for all will lead to more consistency of staff, improved continuity, and less absenteeism.  These benefits will therefore lead to greater confidence when investing in staff training and personal development, which in turn will lead to better performance and productivity.

All in all, we are embracing the new Minimum Living Wage and looking forward to the inevitable opportunities it presents. BBC No.2 for Spectrum – Another successful event for all…

It certainly has been a busy Summer for the Spectrum Events Team who are now getting their breath back after another exciting, if ultimately disappointing, night at Hampden Park last night. We were delighted to prepare the stadium for the sell-out crowd for the Scotland vs Germany European Championship match, and today we’ve been clearing up and preparing the stadium for it’s next event.

The latest event came hot of the heels of a major event lasting the whole of August – The Edinburgh Festivals. Spectrum Service Solutions were once again delighted to be working with the BBC at their Festivals HQ at Potterrow in Edinburgh for ‘BBC at the Festivals’.

During the period of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival, the BBC Festivals team played host to literally hundreds of acts, and thousands of visitors.  Among the many stars to perform at Potterrow were, Paul Merton, Jo Brand, Rory Bremner, Sylvia Guillem, Nish Kumar and Ian Rankin.  As you’d imagine, with such strong acts on stage the BBC complex was a very busy place indeed.

Spectrum worked day and night throughout the month providing cleaning and waste management service in the public areas, backstage, technical areas, hospitality and VIP areas keeping them clean and tidy for celebrities, presenters, officials, and members of the public.

This is the second time we’ve worked with the BBC; last year we were pleased to provide similar services during the period of the Commonwealth Games at the BBC at the Quay event in Glasgow.  We are very proud of the work our events teams do over these extended events, their dedication and hard work is a major reason why organisations come back to us again and again.  Thank you to each and every one of them who worked tirelessly throughout August to make the event the success that it was.

Bundled Services help win contract for Spectrum

We are delighted to share the news that we have won the contract for bundled services – this time for Skanska.

Skanska is one of the world’s largest construction companies that started out in Sweden 125 years ago and played a key role in building Sweden’s infrastructure. Today it is an international leader in both green and quality construction, we are naturally delighted to be working with such a well known and prestigious global company.

In the UK, Skanska is involved with some of the country’s most important building and infrastructure projects working with both private and public-sector clients. Skanska specialise in providing outstanding and bespoke facilities management solutions – their confidence in Spectrum, and our ability to provide and manage services is exceptionally valuable, and a great source of pride.

We are now providing a wide range of services for Skanska and our ability to meet their multiple needs helped towards securing the contract. Notably, the ability to now offer a variety of soft FM and security services were contributing factors in helping Spectrum to win this new contract.

We are constantly adding to our range of services in response to a growing trend towards bundled services. Many clients are keen to work with fewer suppliers who can offer a full range of services to a common standard. Here at Spectrum we apply the same quality control procedures, and high level of customer service, to all of the services we offer.

The range of services we provide is growing, as is the team at Spectrum who provide them. Daily cleaning, manned guarding, internal and external pest control, outdoor maintenance, internal and external waste management are all services we provide daily to a wide range of clients. We will even provide snow clearance services, however we hope it will be a while yet before this particular service is in operation in 2015!

Edinburgh Festival success for Spectrum Service Solutions…

We are delighted to announce another great collaboration with DF Concerts; we will be working with the event organisers at this year’s BBC at the Edinburgh Festivals.

The near month-long event runs from 7th August until 30th August at the BBC’s own festival venue at Potterrow. The venue offers BBC shows, family fun, exclusive highlights, and live performance from some of the best acts the Festivals have to offer. There are more than 100 free shows already scheduled to take place, so it is sure to be a very busy venue during August.

Spectrum Service Solutions will provide cleaning and waste management services for the BBC’s venue including, public areas, production facilities, BBC personnel rooms, and entertainers changing and rest areas.

It is not the first time that Spectrum has worked with the BBC; In 2014, Spectrum provided similar services at BBC at the Quay, a two-week event which coincided with The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Spectrum’s Managing Director, Sara Speirs said, “We are delighted to once again be involved is such a high profile event, providing services in another temporary overlay environment. This contract enhances our growing reputation as the leading cleaning and waste management service providers in the event sector, whether it is a fixed or temporary location.”

All in all it is shaping up to be another extremely busy year for the events team at Spectrum, having already provided services at events every month in 2015, the latest being last weekend’s 50,000+ sell-out concert by supergroup, AC/DC at Hampden Park.

BIFM Gala Ball and Awards 2015 – Much more than just another event!

Saturday night is a big night for Spectrum Service Solutions, we’re off to another big event. However, unlike most of the big events we’ve attended recently, we’re not working at this one; this time it’s the BIFM Scottish Region 2015 Gala Ball & Awards, a glittering black-tie ceremony in Glasgow’s Marriott Hotel.

We are especially excited this year because Spectrum Service Solutions has been shortlisted in one of the highly coveted awards categories, of which there are only three.  We have been named one of three finalists for the FM Project of the Year for the work our team did during an extremely busy Summer last year.

Over a three month period we successfully delivered cleaning and waste management services at 6 venues for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, The Scottish Open Golf Championship at Royal Aberdeen, and the Ryder Cup matches at Gleneagles.  The project management team worked tirelessly to maintain each venue as hundreds of thousands of visitors passed through, it really was a great achievement by everyone involved.

We were particularly pleased with the feedback from the clients at the end of the Summer, but there’s something special about being recognised by your peers, that’s why we’re delighted to have been included in a very short list of finalists on Saturday night.

As stated on the BIFM Website, “The Awards give organisations the opportunity to publicly recognise and showcase the achievements and accomplishments of their own people before like-minded peers.  This recognition motivates others to strive for excellence, which again benefits the organisation.”

We are particularly pleased for the hard working team at Spectrum, it is fitting recognition for their exception work throughout the whole of 2014, and the start of another busy year in 2015.
