Spectrum’s Love proves vital in a tense affair…

Here at Spectrum Service Solutions we are used to bringing you details about the events at which we work; indeed, we’ve been involved in some of the biggest sporting events hosted in Scotland over the past few years.  However, this time we’re delighted to bring you news of one of the biggest sporting events that one of our staff has ever been involved in – The Scottish Championship play-off final.

Spectrum Site Facilities Manager, Ally Love, played an important role for Brechin City in the final which was played over two legs last week.  Having beaten Alloa Athletic 1-0 in first leg at Glebe Park, it was always going to be an exciting game for the return match at The Indodrill Stadium and it certainly didn’t disappoint – Alloa Athletic eventually ran out 4-3 winners to take the game to extra time and then to penalties.

It was the second time in little over a week that Ally and his teammates faced a very tense penalty shoot-out; Raith Rovers witnessed Ally’s cool head in the semi-final shoot-out as he slotted away one of Brechin’s penalties, and Alloa Athletic suffered a similar experience as his nerve held once more to score from the penalty spot on Saturday.

Brechin City won 5-4 on penalties and will now play in the 2nd tier of Scottish football next season.  Congratulations go to Ally and his teammates as they enjoy a well deserved break before the start of a new challenge next season.

For Spectrum, the football season is not quite finished yet, we have the Scottish Cup Final this today at Hampden Park, and then we have the small matter of Scotland v England on the 10th June for what is sure to be an exciting World Cup Qualifier.

2017, our busiest start to a year – thanks to our valued employees…

The first few months of 2017 have been the busiest we’ve ever experienced at Spectrum Service solutions; we’ve renewed lots of contracts and won some exceptional new work to add to our growing portfolio.  What’s even better is that many of these new contracts have been won in competitive tenders; recently we’ve brought you news of contract wins at Barony UniversalWyman-Gordon and Scottish Ambulance Service, and we have a few more to announce in the coming days and weeks.

Of course, our valued long-established clients have also been keeping us busy, whilst the events division has already seen two cup semi-finals at Hampden Park and the first event for Kiltwalk 2017.  All of this has meant we’ve fallen behind with our Employee of the Month announcements.

The growth of Spectrum Service Solutions wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and hard work put in by each and every employee, so whilst we may not have announced the winners recently, we have still selected them as usual, and we will continue to celebrate their efforts in this manner in the future.  So, to bring the record up-to-date, we have pleasure announcing three winners at once.

Graham Allan

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH – JANUARY 2017

Graham PicGraham is a true Spectrum success story and we are delighted he was the first Employee of the Month in 2017.

Graham joined the company in May 2014 after attending a joint workshop hosted by Spectrum Service Solutions and Jobs & Business Glasgow which aimed to get unemployed candidates back into work. During this training session we covered information about the Industry, practical task training and provided advice on how to interview and gain employment.

Fortunately, we managed to offer employment to all the attendees; each were offered work at the Commonwealth Games which, for many, led to sustainable long-term employment. We are also proud to say that many of them are still working with Spectrum today.

With his polite and professional approach, Graham stood out immediately.  His attitude was not only confined to fellow employees, but also with our customers.  This, coupled with his work ethic and eye for detail has made it easy to invest in upskilling him; three years on, he is now our Site Manager for Hampden Park Events as well as Supervisor for many other events and specialist cleans.  Graham also provides cover for many skilled roles within the business and it’s not uncommon for our customers to specifically request he stays on their site permanently – a testament to his excellent attitude.

A big thank you and congratulations go to Graham for being the first Employee of the Month for 2017.

Angela Hopkinson

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH – FEBRUARY 2017

Angela PicOur second Employee of the Month for 2017 went to Angela Hopkinson. Angela has been working with Spectrum since August 2014; Like Graham, she initially worked at Hampden Park during the Commonwealth Games and since then we were able to offer her long-term employment at one of the large call centre sites where we deliver facilities management services.  Angela’s growth has reflected the customer site where she works; as the business has grown, Angela has progressed and is now Supervisor on site and successfully leads a team of like-minded hard working individuals.

Our client, Siobhan Curley, Facilities Co-ordinator, was kind enough to write a few words about the work Angela does on their site, “Angela is a fantastic help, not only with her job role within Ascensos, but also always goes that extra mile to help the business out in many ways. She is a conscientious, meticulous and loyal worker and she has set the benchmark for cleaning standards and truly represents the values of Spectrum Service Solutions.”

Well done Angela for being named the second Employee of the Month for 2017, your hard work is much appreciated.

Carol Cramb

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH – MARCH 2017

carol PicThe March Employee of the Month award went to Carol Cramb.   Carol is a perfect example of how we develop talent at Spectrum; we always aim to develop and upskill our employees meaning we have greater opportunities to promote from within. Carol joined the business just under one year ago and due to her hard work, growth and previous experience, she is now beginning her new role as Area Manager (East).

Carol began working for Spectrum in a large call centre that we service in Edinburgh and at an early stage it was clear she was not only an exemplary employee, but also a very hard working and capable leader. Over time, Carol became stand-in Supervisor looking after a team of six, she mentored and developed them into a strong team to ensure we are delivering the flexibility required by the customer to the highest possible standard.

This year Carol has been involved in many projects such as the mobilisation of the Scottish Ambulance Stations in Lothian and the two new Citibase sites we have recently been awarded in Edinburgh City and The Gyle. Carol is a hands-on manager, she enjoys working alongside her teams to support and develop them.

Congratulations Carol, we look forward to your valuable contribution to the company in the future, and to watching you develop your new role.

Employee of the month December

Claire Rankin is our December Employee of the Month. She joined our company in November 2014 as a cleaning operative in one of the large call centres that we service in Glasgow City centre.

She has always had impeccable standards and a proactive approach. These qualities led to her promotion to Site Supervisor a year after she joined the company.

Now she looks after a team of nine in a busy contact centre environment, works within our Event Division and helps to supply the daily cleaning service at the Space Solutions Glasgow office.

Space Solutions are a client with a variety of needs who we also provide builders cleans (the clean of a fit out after building work is completed and prior to final touches) and sparkle cleans (a final clean to remove the last dust and debris) after office fit-outs and redesigns.

Vicki Walker, the Regional Manager for Space Solutions was kind enough to provide us with a short testimonial about Claire:

‘Claire is classed as one of the team at Space Solutions since we moved 18mths ago, going beyond to deliver an outstanding quality of service. It’s important our office needs to reflect us as a business and this is only enhanced by Claire who keeps that standard where it should be. In addition, she is friendly and approachable, and we are delighted she has won employee of the month, very well deserved.’

Employee of the Month September

Alison McDonald

Alison McDonald is our employee of the month for September.

Ally joined our company in September 2014 as a part time cleaning operative. From day one she has always been a very personable and positive character, she is a joy to work with.

In May this year the Supervisor role became vacant at her place of work and more than one member of our management team had Alison in mind for it. The client, Bridge of Weir Leather, is a company local to ours who are also a member of Renfrew Chamber of Commerce and we have worked with them for some time now.

Her knowledge and attention to detail were ideal qualities for the position and we knew she had a great relationship with her colleagues. We have worked closely with Alison this year in developing her in her new supervisory role and she has recently undergone a First Aid training course.

We have had some excellent customer feedback about her and we are delighted with Alison and her team’s progress so she is definitely a worthy winner for September.

A hat-trick of nominations for Spectrum…

It’s hard to believe that the ROCCO Awards are fast approaching again, it’s certainly been a very quick and busy year and it seems no time at all since Spectrum was named Family Business of the Year 2015.  The awards night is always one of the highlights of our year when we get to meet old friends and colleagues from many of the other successful businesses based in Renfrewshire.

This year we are especially looking forward to the evening because we’ve been shortlisted for not one, but three awards.  Once again, we have been nominated for the Family Business of the Year which we won in 2013, and the Excellence in Customer Service – an award we have been privileged to win in 2008, 2010 and 2013.  It is extremely rewarding to be nominated for these two prestigious awards once again.

The third nomination is a category that is new to Spectrum – the ROCCO Award for Business Leader of the Year.  This award is one for which our Managing Director, Sara Speirs is delighted to be shortlisted.  We are very pleased that Sara’s leadership of Spectrum has been recognised by the ROCCO Awards and that she is joining such an illustrious list of business leaders in the finals for this category.

IoD IconOf course, it is not the first time Sara’s personal achievements have been acknowledged; she is the current IoD Scotland Director of the Year, and a finalist in the National IoD Director of the Year Finals 2016 in the SME Director of the Year category.  The winner will be announced at a glittering ceremony in London’s Lancaster Hotel on the 21st October.

The ROCCO Awards 2016 take place on the 18th November at the Normandy Hotel and we are looking forward to what is always a great evening where we can celebrate the achievements of some incredibly successful businesses in the area.  We wish all of the finalists all the best for the awards and we look forward to seeing them all on the night.

Scottish award secured, now our attention is directed to London…

The IoD Awards are very sought after, and highly respected, and many great names in Scottish industry have been privileged to win this award in the past.  The whole team at Spectrum was truly delighted when Sara won the award for businesses under £15 million turnover at the glittering awards ceremony in Glasgow.

The Journey continues…

Imagine then how pleased we are to find out that this particular journey hasn’t ended; Sara has just been shortlisted in the IoD Director of the Year UK Finals 2016 in the ‘SME Director of the Year’ category.

There are around 90 finalist across the twelve categories and Sara is only one of five who are from Scotland and Sara is the only Scottish nominee in her award category.

Just to be shortlisted for such a prestigious UK award is extremely rewarding for everyone at Spectrum, however we now wish Sara all the best as she is considered for this remarkable accolade – naturally, we all think it is something she deserves to win.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London’s Lancaster Hotel on the 21st October, we all wish her well and we are delighted to share her excitement at reaching this stage.

It’s a hat-trick for Spectrum…

We were delighted to be named winners again on Saturday night when Spectrum lifted the “2016 FM Team of the Year” award at the BIFM Scotland Recognition Awards.  This makes it three major awards in the last 6 months.  Back in November, Spectrum won the ROCCA Awards “Family Business of the Year” award, and in March our Managing Director, Sara Speirs won the “IoD Director of the Year 2016” award.  So, you can appreciate why were so happy to win again on Saturday.

The most recent win also completes another hat-trick – a family award, an individual award, and now a team award.

There’s a third reason why we are especially pleased with this award;  The BIFM Scotland Recognition Awards recognise outstanding performers in FM, so this is an award from our peers.  Any award win is welcome, however winning an industry award is all the more satisfying.  We were up against some truly wonderful companies, and we were in the company of all the major players in our industry on the awards night.

The feeling was best summed up by Spectrum’s Managing Director, Sara Speirs who said, “I am truly delighted that Spectrum won this award, it is so nice to be recognised by people from within your own industry.  It is also a fantastic outcome for the whole team at Spectrum, we have won other awards in the past, but this one is a team award, and each and every member of our team is responsible for our win tonight”.

It’s not just award wins that Spectrum are celebrating, with multiple contract wins already in 2016, it has been an incredible start to the year.  We will be bring you some details about some of these new contracts is the coming weeks, but for now it’s time to let the whole team celebrate, albeit briefly!

March Employee of the Month

Staff Thomas Irvine

Thomas Irvine is our March employee of the month.

Thomas is a vital part of our team who manages large ad hoc jobs for us. His key roles include troubleshooting on sites and he often manages a team of 20+ staff at events at Hampden Park. He has travelled with us to work at The Scottish Open many times.

His daily duties also include covering supervisor’s and site manager’s holidays and any absence on contracts. We are very happy that he’s now experienced and knowledgeable about all the different types of contracts we work in.

Thomas has developed his skills during his time with us too. He is now fully competent in using a variety of machines; scrubber driers, buffing machines and pressure washers. More than that he trains others how to use them. He is first aid trained and trained to work at heights.

Thomas is a credit to Spectrum Service Solutions, he’s extremely personable, very flexible and always has our customer’s best interests at heart. Many staff members look up to and seek advice from him.

He is a member of the team we often say we simply could not manage without. He really is an absolute star and we are delighted he is part of our team.

It’s a big weekend of awards for Spectrum…

It’s another big weekend for the Spectrum team, hot on the heels of the Scottish Cup Semi Finals at Hampden Park and The Kiltwalk in Glasgow comes another busy and exciting weekend. However, this time we aren’t working at events, instead we are attending them!

On Sunday night we will be attending the Scottish Entertainment Awards as a sponsor, and as judges in one of the categories, we will bring you more news about this next week.

It is Saturday night that has us really excited, we are attending the BIFM Scotland Awards Dinner 2016. The glittering awards dinner will take place at Glasgow’s Marriott Hotel and is the major awards dinner for the Facilities Management industry in Scotland, and we are shortlisted for one of only three awards. The BIFM Scotland Recognition Awards recognise outstanding performers in FM.

We are delighted to be finalists in the ‘2016 FM Team of the Year’ category, especially when you see the quality of the other finalists attending on the night – we wish them all well.

This is the second year in a row we have been named finalists at the BIFM Scotland Awards; last year we went on to be named winners of the “FM Project of the Year’, so we are hoping we can replicate that success with a win in this years nominated category. Regardless of the outcome, we are delighted to be included as finalists, and we are truly looking forward to catching up with many friends and colleagues in the industry at what always proves to be a great night.

We will let you know next week how we get on, but for now it’s fingers crossed.

February Employee of the Month

Mags Feb employee of the month

Margaret Urquhart, Mags, is our employee of the month for February.

Mags joined us in August 2014 following a training programme hosted by ourselves and Jobs & Business Glasgow to get unemployed people back to work.

Taught by Rebecca Speirs and Helen Love, our Regional Operations Managers, it covered industry regulations; Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, Health and Safety, Risk Assessments, Colour Coding, hands on cleaning. We also looked at more general skills like Customer Service, how to get back to work and the interview process.

Mags was one of the participants and she stood out from day one. She has excelled with Spectrum ever since.

During the Commonwealth Games she worked at major venues including Hampden, Ibrox and Celtic.

From the start we recognised her abilities and she quickly worked her way up to Team Leader.

Margaret went on to gain a permanent, full time position with us in one of the Glasgow schools we clean in. In more recent months she has then gained a further promotion to Team Leader. She looks after a team of four on a daily basis to maintain our continually high standards.

She has an excellent eye for detail and a wonderful personality which motivates everyone around her. She is a true asset.  Following some additional excellent feedback from our client at the school where she works we are happy to recognise her as our Employee of the Month for February.
