Another night to remember at the ROCCO Awards…

Over the years we have been involved in many business awards, but the ones closest to our heart are the ROCCO Awards.  After all, the ROCCO Awards celebrate the achievements of Renfrewshire businesses; this is where it all began for Spectrum Service Solutions and it is where we are proud to have our head office.  We have expanded a great deal over the years and we operate throughout the whole of Scotland; indeed, this year we have also made significant inroads into England, but Renfrewshire will always be our home.

We also appreciate and value the integrity of the ROCCO Awards with its many independent judges who interview, scrutinise and assess all the finalists.  However, it is the fact that we can celebrate with our team at these awards that truly make it a favourite in our business event calendar.

This year, Spectrum Service Solutions were named as finalists in three categories; Excellence in Customer Service, Family Business of the Year and Outstanding Business >25 staff, all of which we have been successful in winning in the past.  As usual with the ROCCO Awards, the quality in each category was exceptionally high and this time round we were content to celebrate the significant achievements of the winners in each category.

839 ROCCO 620 1However, the night ended on a high for all at Spectrum when our Managing Director, Sara Speirs lifted the premier individual award – ROCCO Award for Business Leader of the Year.  Sponsored by Diageo, this award is presented every year to the most inspiring business leader of the year and we were delighted when Sara was named this year’s winner.

Speaking about the award, Sara Speirs said, “I am stunned and very pleasantly surprised to win such a prestigious award.  When you look at the long list of previous winners it’s like a who’s who in Scottish business, I am delighted to join such eminent and successful names on that list.  Of course, like most awards, even individual ones, it wouldn’t have been possible without the support, trust and hard work of the team at Spectrum, I would like to thank each and every one of them for making this possible.

We are proud of our Renfrewshire roots and I am particularly proud to be recognised by the business community in the town that we consider Spectrum’s home.  We have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Renfrewshire Chamber and the ROCCOs and we hope we will continue to enjoy these nights for many years to come.”

Nominations galore for the team at Spectrum

You will know from recent blog posts that we have been having an exceptional year by winning many new contracts throughout Scotland.  However, it’s not only new contract awards that we are celebrating, we’ve also been nominated for several major awards.  Naturally, we are always delighted to be shortlisted for one award, but to be considered for seven is exceptional.

BCC 1Last month, we were delighted to be named the Scottish Regional Winner of the British Chamber Awards in the “Excellence in Customer Service” category.  As regional winners, Spectrum now go on to represent Scotland in the UK finals at a Gala Awards Dinner on Thursday 30th November at the Brewery, London.

RBS 1We were also delighted to be finalists in another prestigious UK Award – The RBS Great British Entrepreneur Awards, this time in the “Family Business of the Year”.  The finals took place at a glittering ceremony at the RBS Headquarters in Edinburgh when we were delighted to be named runner-up in the UK wide competition.

Herald 1“Excellence in Customer Service” is our finalist category in yet another long-established awards night – The Herald Scottish Family Business Awards.  The winners will be announced at their formal dinner and awards presentation on the 6th December at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow.

ROCCO 1However, it is this week that has us really excited.  We have been named in three separate categories for the ROCCO Awards which are hosted annually by the Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce.  Hosted in our home town, these awards are particularly close to our hearts, so we were delighted to see the Spectrum name appear, not three times, but four in total on the awards programme!  We have been shortlisted in the following categories:

  • ROCCO Award for Excellence in Customer Services
  • ROCCO Award for Family Business of the Year
  • ROCCO Award for Outstanding Business >25 staff

We are honoured to be finalists in these three categories, however we are doubly delighted that our Managing Director, Sara Speirs has been named a finalist in the “ROCCO Award for Business Leader of the Year”.

Speaking about the recent nominations, Sara Speirs said, “I am overwhelmed at the number of nominations we’ve received this year and that we have been named as finalists in so many major awards.  These successes don’t happen by accident, it is testament to the hard work applied by every member of the team at Spectrum.  Whether we are ultimately named as winners or not, we are already proud to be taking part in the final stages of so many awards nights.”

Our hearts are truly in the latest contract win

Spectrum is no stranger to football, we have enjoyed a first-class relationship with Hampden Park for 10 years, so we are used to preparing stadiums for match days.  This experience was invaluable in helping us secure our latest contract in a competitive tender process. We are delighted to announce that we will be providing a wide range of services for Heart of Midlothian Football Club at Tynecastle Park in Edinburgh.

The football club is well into its ambitious redevelopment of the stadium which will see the capacity extended to over 20,000.  The plans also include new hospitality suites and corporate entertainment areas throughout the ground.  Furthermore, there will be significant upgrades to the main Reception Area, Players’ Lounge, Media Suite and Police Control Room.  On completion, Tynecastle is set to be one of the best football stadiums in the country.

Spectrum is delighted to have been selected to provide daily office cleaning and event cleaning services, pre and post match deep cleans, window cleaning, consumables, function suite cleaning, waste services, external cleaning and specialist cleaning.  And to kick it all off, we will be providing the initial sparkle clean when the redevelopment is complete.

Speaking about the contract win, Sara Speirs, Managing Director at Spectrum said, “We are very excited about this latest win.  The redevelopment of Tynecastle Park is a major investment for the club and it will provide one of the best football facilities in the country, naturally we are delighted to be involved with a club that clearly has big ambitions on and off the pitch.  We are looking forward to working with the team at Hearts in the future”.

We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the 2017 Royal Bank of Scotland Great British Entrepreneur Awards in the Family Business Entrepreneur of the Year category.

Spectrum Service Solutions beat off some tough competition in order to make the regional shortlist, with over 1000 businesses entering the awards nationally across the wide range of categories.

Now in its fifth year, the Royal Bank of Scotland Great British Entrepreneur Awards has celebrated some amazing entrepreneurs over the years, many of whom are now household names. Past winners include David Buttress of Just Eat, Julie Deane of The Cambridge Satchel Company, James Watt of BrewDog and Alexander Solomou of TheLADBible Group.

Speaking about the nomination, Spectrum’s Managing Director, Sara Speirs said, “I’m delighted to be shortlisted for this award; once again, it’s great recognition for the team here at Spectrum and all the hard work and commitment they show every day.  To reach the final nomination stage is a big achievement and we’re looking forward to another great awards night on the 9th November”.

Creator of the Awards, Francesca James, said: “We have been inundated with some incredible entries this year, and all shortlisted applicants should be extremely proud of themselves! This year has seen a record number of entrants and we’ve been absolutely blown away by the strength and diversity of applications.”

The chemistry is right at Grangemouth…

We are delighted to announce another two contract wins, this time at Scotland’s prime chemicals site in Grangemouth.

CalaChem is one of the UK’s leading fine chemicals manufacturers and a key provider of services at the Grangemouth site.  CalaChem operate two business units; custom manufacturing is provided from their five chemicals manufacturing plants, and their Services division provides such as utilities, effluent treatment, facilities management and property management to companies on the Earls Gate Park site adjacent to the Grangemouth manufacturing site

Separately, but within the same development, we will be providing a range of services to international market leader, FujiFilm.  For them we will be providing cleaning services in the offices, canteen areas, mess rooms and locker rooms.  This will also include hygiene and washroom services, waste disposal services (including confidential waste), laundry services and the provision of bottled water.

For CalaChem, we will be providing cleaning and janitorial services to offices, kitchens, toilets, laboratories, mess rooms, changing rooms and locker rooms.  In addition, we will be providing reception services and management services for stores, consumables, water and pest control.

Once again, the team at Spectrum are delighted to be involved with companies that are market leaders, at a site which plays a major part in Scotland’s chemical industry.

These contract wins are the latest in a string of successes we’ve been reporting since the start of 2017, it is testament to the hard work and dedication shown throughout the team at Spectrum.  It certainly has been an exceptional period and we’re looking forward to bringing you news of other new contracts over the summer months.

A fair slice of the golfing calendar for Spectrum

It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that Spectrum Events’ 2017 calendar is about to get into full swing; yes, we’ve already been very busy this year with domestic and international football at Hampden Park, not to mention a sell-out Stone Roses concert, and 250,000+ people to clean up after at The Royal Highland Show.  Now, we are turning our attention to the fairways and greens of competitive golf to provide services to the biggest golf events taking place in Scotland this year.

This week we are delighted to be working with the European Tour for the fifth consecutive year at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Championship which takes place at Dundonald Links from the 12th – 16th July.  The Spectrum Events Team have been at the Ayrshire course all week preparing for some of the biggest names in golf as they compete for the much-coveted title of Scottish Open Champion 2017.  As usual, the Scottish Open will be broadcast around the world and remains one of the few European Tour events that is shown live on American television.

With some of the greatest golfers in the game registered to play, the Ayrshire course is certain to draw a massive crowd, so we know we have a busy few days ahead to keep all public areas clean and free of waste.  However, our duties at these major golf events go far beyond the public areas of the course – we also provide cleaning and waste management services for all other public areas; this includes, public catering, merchandising, corporate hospitality suites, VIP areas, official and technical areas and BOH operational areas.

We are then back at Dundonald Links for the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open Championship from the 27th – 30th July.  Once again, we expect some big crowds as some of the leading ladies of the game compete for the Ladies Scottish Open title.

The following week, we move to the other side of the country to provide our full range of services for the Scottish Seniors Open which is being played at the superb Renaissance Club at North Berwick from the 4th – 7th August.

These three events will keep us busy in Scotland for the next few weeks, however it doesn’t stop there; we are then off South of the border to provide our full range of cleaning and waste management services at the British Masters28th September – 1st October at the magnificent Close House course in Newcastle upon Tyne.  Long established in the world’s golfing calendar, the British Masters always attracts a fantastic field made up from some of the best players in the game.  We are looking forward to taking our experience and expertise South of the border for one of the biggest events in the golfing calendar.

We will be bringing you updates from each of these prestigious events as they happen, for now it’s heads down as we tee off with the AMM Scottish Open Championship this week.

Upwardly mobile – in a clockwise direction…

It is great to see landmark buildings being refurbished to meet the changing needs of businesses and we are sure Savoy Tower is set to move in an upward (clockwise) direction, and we are happy to be playing a part in the journey.

Spectrum’s Love proves vital in a tense affair…

Here at Spectrum Service Solutions we are used to bringing you details about the events at which we work; indeed, we’ve been involved in some of the biggest sporting events hosted in Scotland over the past few years.  However, this time we’re delighted to bring you news of one of the biggest sporting events that one of our staff has ever been involved in – The Scottish Championship play-off final.

Spectrum Site Facilities Manager, Ally Love, played an important role for Brechin City in the final which was played over two legs last week.  Having beaten Alloa Athletic 1-0 in first leg at Glebe Park, it was always going to be an exciting game for the return match at The Indodrill Stadium and it certainly didn’t disappoint – Alloa Athletic eventually ran out 4-3 winners to take the game to extra time and then to penalties.

It was the second time in little over a week that Ally and his teammates faced a very tense penalty shoot-out; Raith Rovers witnessed Ally’s cool head in the semi-final shoot-out as he slotted away one of Brechin’s penalties, and Alloa Athletic suffered a similar experience as his nerve held once more to score from the penalty spot on Saturday.

Brechin City won 5-4 on penalties and will now play in the 2nd tier of Scottish football next season.  Congratulations go to Ally and his teammates as they enjoy a well deserved break before the start of a new challenge next season.

For Spectrum, the football season is not quite finished yet, we have the Scottish Cup Final this today at Hampden Park, and then we have the small matter of Scotland v England on the 10th June for what is sure to be an exciting World Cup Qualifier.

2017, our busiest start to a year – thanks to our valued employees…

The first few months of 2017 have been the busiest we’ve ever experienced at Spectrum Service solutions; we’ve renewed lots of contracts and won some exceptional new work to add to our growing portfolio.  What’s even better is that many of these new contracts have been won in competitive tenders; recently we’ve brought you news of contract wins at Barony UniversalWyman-Gordon and Scottish Ambulance Service, and we have a few more to announce in the coming days and weeks.

Of course, our valued long-established clients have also been keeping us busy, whilst the events division has already seen two cup semi-finals at Hampden Park and the first event for Kiltwalk 2017.  All of this has meant we’ve fallen behind with our Employee of the Month announcements.

The growth of Spectrum Service Solutions wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and hard work put in by each and every employee, so whilst we may not have announced the winners recently, we have still selected them as usual, and we will continue to celebrate their efforts in this manner in the future.  So, to bring the record up-to-date, we have pleasure announcing three winners at once.

Graham Allan


Graham PicGraham is a true Spectrum success story and we are delighted he was the first Employee of the Month in 2017.

Graham joined the company in May 2014 after attending a joint workshop hosted by Spectrum Service Solutions and Jobs & Business Glasgow which aimed to get unemployed candidates back into work. During this training session we covered information about the Industry, practical task training and provided advice on how to interview and gain employment.

Fortunately, we managed to offer employment to all the attendees; each were offered work at the Commonwealth Games which, for many, led to sustainable long-term employment. We are also proud to say that many of them are still working with Spectrum today.

With his polite and professional approach, Graham stood out immediately.  His attitude was not only confined to fellow employees, but also with our customers.  This, coupled with his work ethic and eye for detail has made it easy to invest in upskilling him; three years on, he is now our Site Manager for Hampden Park Events as well as Supervisor for many other events and specialist cleans.  Graham also provides cover for many skilled roles within the business and it’s not uncommon for our customers to specifically request he stays on their site permanently – a testament to his excellent attitude.

A big thank you and congratulations go to Graham for being the first Employee of the Month for 2017.

Angela Hopkinson


Angela PicOur second Employee of the Month for 2017 went to Angela Hopkinson. Angela has been working with Spectrum since August 2014; Like Graham, she initially worked at Hampden Park during the Commonwealth Games and since then we were able to offer her long-term employment at one of the large call centre sites where we deliver facilities management services.  Angela’s growth has reflected the customer site where she works; as the business has grown, Angela has progressed and is now Supervisor on site and successfully leads a team of like-minded hard working individuals.

Our client, Siobhan Curley, Facilities Co-ordinator, was kind enough to write a few words about the work Angela does on their site, “Angela is a fantastic help, not only with her job role within Ascensos, but also always goes that extra mile to help the business out in many ways. She is a conscientious, meticulous and loyal worker and she has set the benchmark for cleaning standards and truly represents the values of Spectrum Service Solutions.”

Well done Angela for being named the second Employee of the Month for 2017, your hard work is much appreciated.

Carol Cramb


carol PicThe March Employee of the Month award went to Carol Cramb.   Carol is a perfect example of how we develop talent at Spectrum; we always aim to develop and upskill our employees meaning we have greater opportunities to promote from within. Carol joined the business just under one year ago and due to her hard work, growth and previous experience, she is now beginning her new role as Area Manager (East).

Carol began working for Spectrum in a large call centre that we service in Edinburgh and at an early stage it was clear she was not only an exemplary employee, but also a very hard working and capable leader. Over time, Carol became stand-in Supervisor looking after a team of six, she mentored and developed them into a strong team to ensure we are delivering the flexibility required by the customer to the highest possible standard.

This year Carol has been involved in many projects such as the mobilisation of the Scottish Ambulance Stations in Lothian and the two new Citibase sites we have recently been awarded in Edinburgh City and The Gyle. Carol is a hands-on manager, she enjoys working alongside her teams to support and develop them.

Congratulations Carol, we look forward to your valuable contribution to the company in the future, and to watching you develop your new role.

Who says hard work can’t be fun?

It’s The Kiltwalk time again; now a regular occurrence in the Scottish calendar, and indeed with the Spectrum events team, The Kiltwalk 2017 got underway on Sunday morning.  It’s the third successive year that we’ve been involved and we’re delighted to be back.

It really is a pleasure to support and serve such a great event which raises millions of pounds for Scottish charities and causes.  The Kiltwalk is bigger than ever, with a record number of people taking part at the various events throughout the year – this year’s Glasgow event attracted in excess of 7500 walkers.

Drummer boy at the KiltwalkWe believe it’s popular because so many people can take part, kids can walk with their mums and dads and even their grandparents.  You don’t need to be an athlete to do the Kiltwalk; with three levels (The 23 miles Mighty Stride, the 15 miles Big Stroll and The 6 miles Wee Wander), there’s something to meet everyone’s fitness and ambitions.

Of course, with so many people talking part and so many people turning out to watch there is inevitably some cleaning up to be done, Spectrum Service Solutions is delighted to be on duty along the whole 23-mile route to make sure all waste is removed and disposed of responsibly.  As you can imagine, it’s hard work, but it’s work every member of our team enjoys; unlike the many competitive events we work with, they are able to engage with the walkers and encourage them along the route.  It really is a fun day with a serious purpose where everyone is striving for the same goal – to raise vital funds for charities across Scotland.

We will be providing our services at all the Kiltwalk events again this year, they take place in Aberdeen on the 4th June, Dundee on the 20th August and Edinburgh on the 17th September.  There’s still time to enter the remaining events by going to The Kiltwalk website here and registering online.  If you do, we hope you will say hello to any of the many staff that will be working to keep the routes clean and free of waste.
